5 innovative materials that are good for our shoes (and the planet)
At SAOLA, sustainability is not just a trend, but the heart of our approach. With our Fall/Winter 2025 collection, we wanted to prove that it is possible to wear eco-friendly sneakers that combine urban style, lasting comfort, and respect for the planet.
Each pair is made from innovative and recycled materials: vegan leather made from grape marc, ethical ZQ Merino wool, recycled PET and even a waterproof membrane made from castor beans. Because what makes our shoes unique is not only their design, but also the sustainable stories contained in every fiber.
Here are five materials that are changing the game—for you and for the planet.
1. Grape marc, a material with a bright future: vegan leather that is reinventing fashion
What is it?
An innovative plant-based leather made from wine-making residues—grape skins, seeds, and stems.
Why is it smart?
Because it transforms agricultural waste into a sustainable, durable, and elegant material, ideal for creating vegan and eco-friendly sneakers. In addition to avoiding animal husbandry and toxic tanning, this process reduces the carbon footprint: less CO2, more sustainable style.
The resulting material is durable and flexible, comparable to traditional leather. It retains its shape and structure over time.
The look and feel are similar to classic leather, and it can be worked into different colors and finishes, perfect for stylish sneakers.
2. Castor oil: the natural secret behind our waterproof shoes
What is it?
A waterproof and breathable membrane made from castor oil, a renewable plant with many virtues.
Why is it smart?
Because it offers an alternative that is free from petroleum and toxic substances. The result: eco-friendly waterproof sneakers that keep your feet dry.
3. Recycled bottles: when plastic becomes an eco-friendly material
What is it?
Textile fibers created from recycled PET bottles, collected and then transformed into a durable and comfortable material.
Why is it smart?
Because each pair helps reduce the amount of plastic waste, while consuming less energy than conventional production. The result? A lightweight, durable, and eco-friendly material that's perfect for making recycled sneakers that respect the planet.
The material is strong and lightweight, ideal for the upper and lining of shoes. It is highly resistant to everyday wear and tear. Recycled PET can be used to create flexible, breathable knits that offer comfort and support without compromising on style.
4. ZQ Merino wool: natural softness and ethical commitment
What is it?
Certified ZQ merino wool that is 100% traceable and sourced from farms that respect animal welfare and the environment.
Why is it smart?
Because in addition to being breathable, biodegradable, and thermoregulatory, this wool keeps your feet warm while supporting sustainable and ethical agriculture. The result: eco-friendly wool sneakers that combine natural comfort with a commitment to responsibility.
5. Cork, EVA, PU, and rubber: walk lightly with recycled materials
What is it?
A blend of natural cork, recycled EVA, recycled PU, and recycled rubber—renewable or recycled materials that make up our soles and cushioning systems.
Why is it smart?
Because by reducing the use of virgin plastics, we limit our carbon footprint while preserving what matters most: optimal comfort with every step. The result: eco-friendly and sustainable sneakers, designed to tread lightly on the planet.
Cork is lightweight, flexible, and naturally cushioning. Recycled EVA is comfortable and provides bounce. Recycled PU adds strength and flexibility for greater durability. Recycled rubber is grippy and resistant, making use of existing waste.
Together, these materials offer lightweight, comfortable, durable, and eco-friendly soles.
Why does it really matter?
The textile and footwear industry accounts for more than 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. By choosing sustainable materials, we are taking action where the impact is greatest.
